Comparing the Performance and Driver-Assistance Features of the 2019 Mazda3 and 2019 Hyundai Elantra

All 2019 Mazda3 models run on the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, returning 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The base engine of the 2019 Hyundai Elantra, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, returns 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque.

The Elantra Sport manages to grasp 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque with the 1.6-liter turbo, but the performance-tuned model will land you at least $4,600 above MSRP.

There’s really no challenging Mazda in the arena of driver assistance features. All models beyond the Mazda3 base level feature Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart Brake Support, Driver Attention Alert, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, a Lane Departure Warning System, Lane-keep Assist and High Beam Control. On the 2019 Hyundai Elantra, comparable features don’t make an appearance until late in the lineup. Optional equipment like i-ACTIV AWD®, the 360-Degree Monitor and Rear Smart Brake Support are absent from the Elantra roster.
