How does Mazda’s diesel engine work?
The new Mazda engine will carry on the automaker’s SKYACTIV® label and has been dubbed, SKYACTIV®-X. In the old days, diesel engines were loud and marked by billowing choking black smoke from the vehicle’s exhaust system. Mazda isn’t in the business of polluting the air, so engineers have found a way to make naturally-efficient diesel technology as clean as possible. According to Mazda, the key to a cleaner diesel engine is to make sure it burns more efficiently.
Mazda calls its new technology Spark Controlled Ignition. What sets it apart from normal diesel ignition system is it employs a kind of spark plug – something not normally found in this kind of powertrain. The “spark plug” ignites a fuel-rich mixture which causes compression of another diesel-air mix that then ignites. According to an article on Jalopnik (embedded here), this method of igniting the vehicle’s fuel causes it to be burned more completely. By burning more of the fuel, fewer dirty emissions are released into the atmosphere.
Exact performance specifications and fuel economy scores have yet to be published, but both are expected to be an improvement over what the gasoline engine will have an offer. However, it appears that only the top-of-the-line trim grades of the redesigned Madza3 will be equipped with the new diesel engine.
