Should You Use Regular Fuel or Premium Fuel in the 2020 Mazda CX-5 Compact SUV?
One of the most common questions we hear from customers visiting our showroom is, “Do I have to use premium gas?” The quick answer is no, the Mazda CX-5 does not require premium gas, but it is recommended on models equipped with the turbocharged engine. Mazda’s recommendations for fuel depend on what you’re packing under the hood. Keep reading to learn more about the nuances of choosing a fuel in the Mazda CX-5.
Fuel Requirements for Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring Models
Power for the 2020 Mazda CX-5 comes from a choice of two engines, starting with the standard SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder engine found on Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels. If you have one of these, regular gas is recommended. If you accidentally filled up with premium, don’t worry. It won’t do any damage other than the unnecessary hit to your wallet.
Fuel Requirements for Grand Touring Reserve and Signature Models
If you have the Grand Touring Reserve or Signature model, you’re dealing with a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine, which Mazda recommends filling up with premium gas (91 octane or higher). But that’s sort of in the same way someone might recommend not putting ketchup on a steak. You can still safely use regular unleaded gas, but it will curb performance a bit while your car is running on that fuel type.
